In WEAVING INFRASTRUCTURES untersucht die Choreografin Sara Lanner, wie uns Räume und Infrastrukturen prägen, ermächtigen oder einschränken. Anhand ihrer ganz unterschiedlichen persönlichen Hintergründe gehen drei Performerinnen der Frage nach, wo ihnen Infrastrukturen als Support-, Schutz- oder Machträume begegnen und sich in ihren Persönlichkeiten zeigen. Sie reagieren auf soziale und ökologische Krisen der Gegenwart und beleuchten Fragen von Care und sozialer Gerechtigkeit. Infrastrukturen können so unterschiedlich gestaltet sein: Sie begünstigen oder unterbinden Interaktion oder den Zugang zu Ressourcen. Sie regeln das Leben von Individuen, Gruppen, Milieus und Nationen. Sie formen deren Rituale, Normen oder Gesetze, schaffen Hierarchien und Mechanismen der In- und Exklusion. In WEAVING INFRASTRUCTURES brechen drei Frauen unterschiedlicher Herkunft Flächen auf, verwandeln Orte, Strukturen und damit ihre Geschichten lautstark tanzend bis flüsternd leise in neue Räume und emotionale Landschaften.

In WEAVING INFRASTRUCTURES, choreographer Sara Lanner examines the way spaces and infrastructures inform, empower, or restrict us. Based on their highly varying personal backgrounds, three female performers go out searching for answers to the question of where they have encountered infrastructures as spaces of support, protection, or power – and where they show in their personalities. They react to social and ecological crises of the present, and they shed light on matters of care and social equity. There are so many different ways to make infrastructures. They facilitate or prevent interaction or access to resources. They regulate the lives of individuals, groups, milieus, and nations. They shape their rituals, standards, or laws, creating hierarchies and mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion. In WEAVING INFRASTRUCTURES, three women of different backgrounds disrupt surfaces, transforming places, structures, and, by extension, their own stories into new spaces and emotional landscapes while dancing loudly or whispering quietly.

In der Ausstellung Recasted Relations zeigen zehn Künstlerinnen, die in den vergangenen drei Jahren Teilnehmerinnen des Mentoring-Programm Kunst der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien für Absolvent_innen waren, neueste Arbeiten, in denen sie über zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen, physische und soziale Umgebungen, ihr Verhältnis zur künstlerischen Praxis, das globale Zusammenleben und Möglichkeitsräume für neue performative und relationale Körper reflektieren. Die Analyse der anthropozentrischen Bedingungen sowie die Reflexion auf die Verletzlichkeit und vice versa auf die Resilienz von Mensch und Umwelt bilden dabei die Grundlage.

Für jene, die den Raum betreten, hat er eine Funktion. Wo tauchen Räume in unserer Biografie als Support-System, Schutz- oder Machtraum auf und wie haben diese unsere Persönlichkeit geprägt? Orte, Strukturen und deren Geschichten verweben sich in dieser Performance mit Glasfasern, Bändern, Gesten und Gestein. Sie werden vom Publikum entflochten - nicht zuletzt, um die Frage zu stellen, wie wir gesellschaftliche Konventionen auf der Suche nach care oder sozialer Gerechtigkeit untergraben (underminen) können und damit Veränderungen herbei führen.

For those who enter the space, it has a function. Where do spaces appear in our biography as support systems, protective spaces, or power spaces, and how have they shaped our personalities? Places, structures and their histories interweave in this performance with fiberglass, ribbons, gestures and rock. They are unbraided by the audience - not least to pose the question of how we can subvert (undermine) social conventions in search of care or social justice, and thus bring about change.

Inspiriert von Steve McQueens Western Deep bewegt sich Sara Lanner in MINING MINDS zwischen Berg­bau und Data­ Mining, zwischen materieller und immaterieller Ausbeutung, zwischen Wert, Ethik, Moral, Politik und Macht, und schafft dabei – mit Tänzer Costas Kekis, Licht­designer Bruno Pocheron und zum Sound von Peter Plos – eine Oberfläche der Interdepen­denzen, die an Denis Villeneuves Wüstenepos Dune erinnert.

“Digging beneath the surface“ could be the Austrian choreographer’s motto, who was awarded the prestigious H13 Lower Austria Prize for Performance in 2021. Inspired by Steve McQueen’s Western Deep, Sara Lanner’s MINING MINDS examines fields of tension between natural resource mining and data mining, between material and immaterial exploitation, between values, ethics, morality, politics and power, creating a pattern of interdependencies reminiscent of Denis Villeneuve’s desert epic Dune. Her collaborators in this endeavour are dancer Costas Kekis, light designer Bruno Pocheron and sound artist Peter Plos.

„Intimate Illusions“ is a performative as well as poetic study on the effects of digital realms on our somatic and kinesthetic sense of self. The shiny and slick surface of a piece of sheet metal, one of the most fundamental forms used in metal working, becomes the performer's main partner in this choreography. Illuminating and reflecting on what surrounds us it leaves us with a flickering memory of shadowy images, bodies and landscapes. Acting as a mirror, agent, partner, desired tool or weapon but also as a space and place it thus tries to describe the multiplicities of post-digital corporealities in which we find and redefine ourselves - often within the split of a second.

The performance is part of the group exhibition "connections unplugged, bodies rewired" and takes place within VIENNA ART WEEK 2021.

The young choreographer Sara Lanner, recently awarded the renowned H13 Niederoesterreich Preis für Performance, will premiere her new piece Mining Minds at brut. In it, Sara Lanner progresses deep into our earth to uncover what lies hidden beneath the surface. Drawing a thematic line from mining to our global present, more specifically from data mining to the exploitation of body and mind, she develops a thrilling choreographic duet with dancer Costas Kekis that exposes the connections and interdependencies of society and policy.

Mining Minds begins by focussing on mining and its socio-political impact. Based on the term ‘mining’, Sara Lanner examines the processes of finding and extracting raw materials as well as the way we treat resources. In her on-stage research, the choreographer also comes across processes like ‘data mining’, where humans as such become the resource to be exploited for capitalist purposes. What fascinates Lanner is the way tangible material disappears in such virtual, bodyless processes, while at the same time the power structures behind the data flows become more and more invisible. And yet, the term ‘mining’ is intended to mean not only a destructive process, but also a momentum allowing awareness and potential empathy to derive. ‘I was inspired to do this choreography by the film Western Deep by Steve McQueen. It portrays one of South Africa’s largest mines. I took the conditions and functionality of mining as a basis for a choreographic duet, from which it becomes apparent how the way the surface of the earth is changed for acquiring raw materials involves our society in a twisted interdependence of values, ethics, morals, politics, and power.’

Material Studies No. 3 untersucht performative Handlungen als Vorgang des Erinnerns und verknüpft diese mit einer persönlichen sowie kollektiven Geschichte. Die changierenden Identitäten eines Faltobjekts sowie der Zustand von Präsenz und Abwesenheit werden auf den Körper der Performerin übertragen und machen das Ausstellen ambivalenter Körperbilder sichtbar.

„Sara Lanners Projekt MINE befasst sich mit grundlegenden Fragen unserer Beziehung zur Welt: Mining, auf Deutsch am ehesten mit Bergbau übersetzbar, begegnet uns in der alltagssprachlichen Verwendung vielerorts. Beim Data-Mining werden Informationen gewonnen, Kryptowährungen müssen „gemined“ werden und nicht zuletzt in unserem Verhältnis zu unserer organischen und anorganischen Umwelt, bauen wir ab, schürfen oder extrahieren Rohstoffe. Inwiefern handelt es sich bei diesen Abbauprozessen um Einbahnstraßen, um reine Extraktionen mit drastischen Auswirkungen auf unsere Umwelt? Kann Mining auch von Körper zu Körper stattfinden, in einem wechselseitigen Austausch? Sara Lanners Performance, die am 01.09.2021 im Kunstraum Niederoesterreich erstmals gezeigt wird, eignet sich die –für unsere Gegenwart höchst relevanten -Bedeutungswelten des Bergbaus sowohl metaphorisch als auch durch konkrete Materialstudien an.Sara Lanners Hintergrund liegt an den Schnittstellen zwischen darstellender und bildender Kunst; ihre Praxis zeichnet sich durch ein hohes choreographisches Verständnis, aber auch durch eine ausgesprochene Sensibilität für die Zeigekonventionen der bildenden Kunst aus, was sie für den Gewinn des H13 Niederoesterreich Preis für Performance prädestiniert.“

The performance exhibition 'WHEN THE WORLD IS SICK, CAN SOMEONE BE WELL?’ is a collection of works from six international artists. At the end of this troubling year, together with the artists, Jianan Qu forms a rather rare platform for performance works, which for a moment serves as a safe place.

The setting of the exhibition deals with the current situation where live performance is to some degrees being disabled. At this very moment, how do pandemic politics affect the artists and their artistic expression? How can performative practice be connected to a social dimension despite social limitations?

Through the online platform and with the billboards as an intervention in the public space, the gathered artists talk about the now and the future. What is on their mind and what isn´t. Asking each other how things are going, they are at the same time waiting for what is to come.

The Chinese expression ‘Spring Autumn’ is another word for history. The meaning of these two seasons suggests a change or a transition - into the known as well as the unknown. The title ‘WHEN THE WORLD IS SICK, CAN SOMEONE BE WELL?’ derives from the lyrics of the Canadian band A Silver Mount Zion

 As one of the major annual events conducted by the Ox Warehouse, MIPAF invites to Macau artists that are actively involved in the international art scene, in hopes to foster the exchange of creative approaches, with a manifestation of distinctive artistic personalities; as one would recognize, when the artist’s body becomes the medium, by turning observations of his own habitat into experimental interpretations and critiques, will bring forth a specified expression that reflects our state of ideologies and contexts. The elements of ‘action’, ‘body’ and ‘happenings’ in the Avant-garde Art, which articulate in the art community a theatrical expression of freedom; in recent years, performance art festivals have ceased to generate fertile grounds for the new and the unconventional-this particular form of art poses the power to enthrall. It is the aim of MIPAF to showcase a new generation of performance artists, with their idiosyncratic personas and disposition of creative practices. The Ox Warehouse has by far featured prominent artists from the cross-strait four cities, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, Norway, England, Ireland, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, France and Sweden; their performance works have resulted in multifaceted dialogues that invoked cultural shifts, social theories of a dynamic embodiment, psychoanalysis and political ecology.

We are pleased to announce the Ox Warehouse will be hosting MIPAF this year, where 18 artists with diverse regional backgrounds would present with us their latest works, to stimulate our wildest fantasies, with their deepest concerns on humanity. Traditional Chinese poetry has epitomized the very essence of Classical literature, on a curious note some poems were often left "untitled". The "untitled" works might have indicated that some things are better left unsaid; or the author did not wish for the title to contextualize what we see, by revealing the theme of the poetry. For the unsaid could be a powerful tool, the nameless works in contemporary art are no less than remarkable; they are works of art to bear unspeakable pain, obscure emotions, forlorn hopes or unrequited dreams. The show will present to the Macau audience, a comprehensive view on international and interregional works compelled to humanitarian purposes.

"For two hours I am writing the words MOTHER TONGUE onto a wall with my tongue.

Eventually variations of these words (MY OTHER TONGUE, HER TONGUE, HERE OR THERE, MY MASSIVE TONGUE,...) will come up and sometimes the clear letters drift off to unknown letters or strange signs. The audience becomes part of the performing body by holding glass plates, on which tongue written words are being placed into the room.

Meanwhile on the wall a tongue written graffiti is being created (or an absurd document), which stays permanently or untill the wall is being removed."

Mother Tongue connects thoughts on language and identity, not only throug spoken or written language, but through the body's own organ for speech (the tongue). Mother Tongue describes a state of ambivalence between sign and meaning, between movement and writing, process and decision as well as the self and the other.

Being raised bilingually and within two cultures herself, Sara Lanner draws upon a biographical personal experience that touches also a current political and social discussion.

Im Projekt WE WILL NOT LET YOU GO inszeniert die Künstlerin Fanni Futterknecht gemeinsam mit einer Gruppe von Darsteller*innen in der Nordbahn-Halle tableauartige Situationen und performative Bildmomente. Diese orientieren sich an abstrahierten medialen Bildern von ideologischen Momenten wie etwa Demonstrationen und Manifestationen. Mittels grafischer Sprachelemente und minimalistischer performativer Handlungen lassen Futterknecht und ihre Performer*innen choreografierte poetische Bilder entstehen.

Stumm gesprochene Interviews, kollektive Skulpturen, Konstellationen teils geteilter Erinnerungen. 

Sara Lanner erforscht Fragen nach geteiltem Wissen, Geschichte(n) und kontinuierlicher Praxis in einer persönlichen Choreographie. Durch Interviews mit Künstler_innen und Freund_innen der letzten drei Jahre wird eine kollektive Skulptur, ein poetischer Tanz, eine spekulative Praxis und scheinbare Kontinuität in den Raum gezeichnet.

Ausgehend von Thomas Hirschhorns Arbeit Collage-Truth (2012) untersucht Sara Lanner Körper in Kommerz und Krieg. Im unmittelbaren Aufeinandertreffen gegensätzlicher Körperbilder beschäftigt sie sich mit der Kategorie der Integrität. Das Ausstellen von Körpern wird als Mechanismus des Entstellens befragt. Dafür setzt sich Sara Lanner mit der Instrumentalisierung von Körpern zu Werbe- und Propagandazwecken auseinander.
